The Islet

Once connected to the rest of Mljet via a stone bridge, today Saint Mary is an island within the island, a sanctuary of beauty and tranquillity. The 12th century Benedictine church and monastery rising on its shores represent exceptional historical and cultural value for the region, and were once home to one of the very first libraries in Dalmatia.

The Islet of Saint Mary is the perfect place to let go of the hustle and bustle of the outside world. Take a dip in the inviting salt waters of the lake, which host rare species of plants and wildlife found nowhere else in the world. Come meet the island’s two resident donkeys, Melita and Ante, belonging to the monastery. And, after a pleasant stroll around the islet, why not enjoy a Dalmatian meal and a drink or two on our lovely waterfront terrace.
